Count occurrences

Find out how many times a word or phrase appears in your text.

Input

Count occurrences

Paste any text and search for a word, phrase or character to find out how many times it appears. The tool instantly counts every match and displays the result as a single number. "How many times does the word 'the' appear in my article?" — just search for it and get the answer in one click.

Use the "Case sensitive" toggle to distinguish between uppercase and lowercase letters. By default the search ignores case, so searching for "hello" will count "Hello", "HELLO" and "hello" all the same. Turn on "Case sensitive" to count only the exact capitalization you specify.

The "Whole word only" option matches complete words at word boundaries, so searching for "cat" finds only the standalone word and skips words like "catalog" or "scatter". Without this toggle the search finds the term anywhere it appears, even inside other words. Both options work together: you can search for a phrase with case sensitivity and whole-word matching all enabled.

Everything runs locally in your browser with no upload or logging. The live tally under the result shows the match count and the number of lines in your text for quick reference. Copy the result with one click or download it as a .txt file if you need it elsewhere.

FAQ

Can I search for a phrase instead of a single word?
Yes. Enter any phrase, sentence fragment or even a single character. The tool counts every occurrence of exactly what you type, including spaces and punctuation.
What is the difference between "Case sensitive" and regular search?
By default (case insensitive), searching for "hello" finds "hello", "Hello", "HELLO" and all other capitalizations. Turning on "Case sensitive" counts only the exact case you specify, so "hello" alone without the capital variants.
What does "Whole word only" do?
When turned on it matches only complete words at word boundaries, ignoring partial matches inside other words. For example, searching for "cat" finds only the word "cat" on its own, not the "cat" inside "catalog" or "scatter".
How are overlapping matches counted?
The tool counts non-overlapping matches. If you search for "aa" in "aaaa" it returns 2, not 3, because the matches are counted sequentially without overlap.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser and your text never leaves your device. There is no server processing, storage or logging.
