Emoji cipher

Turn text into a string of emoji and back again, with an optional password.

Emoji cipher

Paste text and this tool maps every letter, digit and (optionally) punctuation mark to an emoji from a chosen alphabet, so the message becomes a string of emoji instead of readable text. Flip the direction to decode a message back to plain text. It's a playful substitution cipher — closer to a puzzle or a fun way to hide a note than to real encryption — and it pairs well with the site's other classic ciphers.

The emoji alphabet field accepts any string of emoji; the default set is 80 face emoji, more than enough for both modes. A password reshuffles which emoji stands for which character, so the same message encodes differently under different passwords and only the matching password decodes it correctly. Preserve spaces and punctuation to leave word breaks and sentence marks untouched, or turn it off to cipher those too. The separator option controls what — if anything — sits between emoji in the output; leaving it empty keeps encoding and decoding unambiguous.

By default the cipher works character by character and is case-insensitive, copying through anything outside its alphabet — accented letters, other scripts, emoji already in your text — unchanged in both directions. Turn on byte mode to encode the raw Base64 bytes of your text instead: it's a longer output, but it preserves case and round-trips any Unicode text exactly, no exceptions. The live tally reports characters in, emoji out, and how many characters the alphabet couldn't represent.

Everything runs locally in your browser — nothing you type is ever sent anywhere. Copy the result, download it as a .txt file, or send the output straight back to the input to decode it again.

FAQ

Is this real encryption?
No. It's a substitution cipher like Atbash or A1Z26, just with emoji instead of letters or numbers — fun for hiding a message from a casual glance, not for protecting sensitive data.
Why does decoding sometimes not match my original text exactly?
The default character mode is case-insensitive and can only represent letters, digits and a small set of punctuation, so anything else is copied through as-is. Turn on byte mode for an exact round-trip of any text.
What does the password do?
A non-empty password deterministically reshuffles which emoji represents which character. Encoding and decoding the same message need the same password — a different one produces a different, non-matching mapping.
What happens if my emoji alphabet is too short?
With the alphabet check on, the tool tells you it needs more emoji rather than guessing. Turn the check off to let it reuse emoji for multiple characters, though decoding then loses information.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The emoji cipher runs entirely in your browser — your text never leaves your device.
