Margin and markup calculator

Paste one line per product in the form name;cost;price and this calculator returns the gross profit, the margin and the markup for every row, then totals the whole list. It is built for the moment before you set prices: an e-commerce catalogue export, a wholesale quote, a market-stall price list, or the column your accountant asked about. Rows copied straight out of a spreadsheet work too.

Mode decides what you are solving for. Margin from price and Markup on cost both read a cost and a selling price, the first reporting profit as a share of revenue and the second as a share of cost. Price from target margin works backwards: give it a cost and the margin you want, and it computes the price that reaches it. VAT rate and Prices include VAT say whether your numbers are gross or net, Platform fee and Fixed fee per sale subtract a marketplace commission, and Price rounding lifts a computed price to a whole number or a .99, .95 or .90 ending.

Fields are separated by semicolons or tabs, and Windows and Unix line endings work interchangeably. A line with two fields is read as cost;price and numbered for you, lines starting with # are treated as notes, and amounts written as 12,50 or 1 234,56 parse fine. Anything unreadable is listed under Skipped rather than quietly changing your totals, and the tally reports the profit, margin and markup for the list.

Everything runs in your browser. Cost prices and supplier terms never leave your device, which is what makes it safe to paste a real catalogue. Copy the report, download it as a .txt file, or send the output back to the input to chain another tool.

FAQ

What is the difference between margin and markup?
Margin is profit as a share of the selling price, markup is the same profit as a share of the cost. A product bought for 4 and sold for 10 has a 60% margin and a 150% markup — the same 6 in profit, measured against two different bases.
How do I get a selling price from a target margin?
Switch Mode to Price from target margin and write the target percentage in the third field, so a line reads name;cost;target. The tool solves for the price that reaches that margin after VAT and fees, then shows the margin you actually land on once rounding is applied.
Are marketplace fees taken off before or after VAT?
The percentage fee is charged on the gross price a buyer pays, which is how Amazon, Etsy and eBay bill it, and the fixed fee is subtracted as entered. Profit is then net revenue minus net cost minus both fees.
Why is one of my rows missing from the table?
Rows whose numbers cannot be read, or whose target margin no price can reach, are listed under Skipped with their line number instead of being folded into the totals. Fix the line and the row reappears.
Are my cost prices uploaded anywhere?
No. The whole calculation runs in your browser, so purchase prices, supplier margins and product names stay on your device.
