Emoji shortcodes
A shortcode is the `:name:` you type when the keyboard has no emoji key β GitHub, Slack and Discord all read them, and all three turn `:tada:` into π. This page lists the ones the site's own converter knows, so what you read here is exactly what it will produce.
The Unicode name in the second column is an identifier rather than a description. It stays in English in every language because that is the form used in a data file, in a regex property and in a bug report β and because it is frequently archaic: β€οΈ is still called HEAVY BLACK HEART. The readable name next to it is what gets translated.
Shortcodes are not standardised. The three platforms agree on all but a handful, and where they disagree the row says so. Nothing on this page is a Unicode rule; it is a convention three chat products happen to share.
Faces
65The largest group, and the one where the shortcode rarely matches the Unicode name β :joy: is a face with tears, not a face of joy.

FAQ
Are shortcodes the same on GitHub, Slack and Discord?
Almost. Of the codes listed here the three agree on every one but three: GitHub writes :+1: and :-1: where Slack and Discord write :thumbsup: and :thumbsdown:, and Discord calls π© :poop: where the other two say :hankey:. Everything else is shared.
Why does the Unicode name not match the shortcode?
They come from different places. The Unicode name is fixed when the character is encoded and can never change, which is why β€οΈ is HEAVY BLACK HEART and π is FACE WITH TEARS OF JOY. The shortcode was chosen later by a chat product for people to type. Neither is wrong; they are answering different questions.
Is this every emoji?
No β it is every emoji the shortcode converter on this site handles, which is the set worth listing here. A page claiming to be a complete emoji index would be out of date the month it shipped; this one is exactly as complete as the tool it documents.
Can I paste a whole message and convert it?
Yes. The emoji shortcode converter takes text in either direction β codes to emoji, or emoji back to codes β and leaves everything else untouched. This page is the lookup table; the tool is for doing it in bulk.
Why do some emoji look different on my device?
The code point is the same everywhere; the picture is drawn by the font your system ships. Apple, Google, Microsoft and Twitter each draw their own, which is why the same π can look friendly on one device and flat on another.
