EU VAT number validator
Check the format and check digit of European VAT numbers, per country.
EU VAT number validator
Paste a list of VAT identification numbers and this tool checks each one against the issuing country's own rules: the exact length, which characters are allowed, and — where the country publishes one — the arithmetic check digit. Every line gets its own verdict, so you can validate a whole spreadsheet column of customer or supplier VAT numbers from every EU member state in one pass.
Leave the country on auto-detect and each line's own two-letter prefix decides which rules apply (Greece works with either GR or the official EL). Pick a single country instead when you have a list of numbers with no prefix at all. Removing spaces and dashes before checking handles numbers copied from invoices or spreadsheets, adding the prefix fills it back in for valid numbers that were missing it, and you can narrow the output to only the valid or only the invalid lines, with or without the reason each rejected number failed.
The tool understands both Windows and Unix line endings, skips blank lines, and the tally underneath reports how many numbers were checked, how many are valid and how many failed. This is a structural check, not a live registry lookup: a number can pass every rule here and still belong to a business that has since deregistered, so confirm an active registration with the EU's own VIES service before relying on it for an invoice.
Everything runs in your browser — no VAT number is ever sent anywhere. Copy the result, download it as a .txt file, or send the output back into the input to run it through another tool.
