Wavelength and frequency calculator

Solve for wavelength, frequency or wave speed from the other two, with an electromagnetic band lookup.

Wavelength and frequency calculator

Paste a list of lines and this tool solves the wave equation v = f × λ for each one, computing whichever of wavelength, frequency or propagation speed is missing. Give any two of the three on a line (f=100MHz w=3m, f=2.4GHz v=299792458) and the third is derived along with the formula used. Give just a frequency or just a wavelength and the tool falls back to the propagation speed for the selected environment, so a whole batch of stations or wavelengths doesn't need "v=..." typed out on every line.

The Environment option presets the propagation speed: vacuum (the speed of light, for radio and light waves), air, water or steel (typical sound speeds in each), or a custom value in m/s for anything else. Frequency unit (Hz, kHz, MHz, GHz) and length unit (m, cm, mm, nm) control how the result is displayed — the input itself accepts any of those suffixes, or a bare number in the currently selected unit. Turn on Show period to also print the wave's period (T = 1/f), and adjust Significant figures to control how much precision the numbers carry.

When the solved speed comes out at (or very near) the speed of light, the tool additionally classifies the wavelength into an electromagnetic-spectrum band — radio, microwave, infrared, visible light or ultraviolet — and, for visible light, an approximate color from violet through red. A line it can't parse, or one giving all three values at once, is left unchanged in the output and counted separately so the rest of the batch still comes through.

Everything runs locally in your browser: nothing you paste is uploaded anywhere. Copy the result, download it as a .txt file, or send the output back into the input to refine it further.

FAQ

What if I only give a frequency or only a wavelength?
The tool uses the propagation speed for the selected Environment (vacuum, air, water, steel or a custom value) to fill in the missing value, so you don’t have to repeat v=... on every line.
How does the electromagnetic band classification work?
When the solved speed is within 1% of the speed of light, the wavelength is classified as radio, microwave, infrared, visible light or ultraviolet, and visible wavelengths also get an approximate color.
Can I mix units within one batch?
Yes. Each value can carry its own unit suffix (100MHz, 2.4GHz, 3m, 600nm); a bare number without a suffix is read in the frequency or length unit currently selected.
What happens to a line the tool can’t solve?
It’s left unchanged in the output and counted as invalid in the tally below, so one bad line never blocks the rest of the batch.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Every calculation runs locally in your browser — nothing you paste ever leaves your device.
