Word scrambler
Randomize the interior letters of words while keeping their first and last letters fixed.
Word scrambler
Paste any text and this tool shuffles the letters inside each word, making them hard to read while keeping the first and last letter in place. This effect, called the "typoglycemia" phenomenon, demonstrates how readers unconsciously recognize words by their overall shape rather than reading each letter. A word like "scramble" becomes something like "scmaelrb" but remains vaguely recognizable at a glance. The phenomenon reveals that skilled readers rely on pattern recognition and context more than on the exact sequence of every character.
Use the keep-first-and-last toggle to control how the scrambling works. When the toggle is on (the default), only the interior letters shuffle while the first and last stay put — this is the classic puzzle mode and easier to read because most readers intuitively identify words by their borders and outline. Turn it off to shuffle every letter in the word, making it much harder to decipher at a glance. Words shorter than the minimum length (3 or 4 letters, depending on the mode) are left unchanged to preserve readability.
This tool is useful for word games, creating puzzles for others to solve, testing reading comprehension, or just playing with language. Educators use similar techniques to show how the brain processes text, while puzzle enthusiasts and game designers rely on word scrambles for entertainment and brain training. It runs completely in your browser with no uploads or logging, so you can safely scramble private text, client content, or educational materials without any concern for privacy.
