Inflation and purchasing power calculator

Enter an amount and this tool shows how inflation changes its real value over time, with a year-by-year breakdown. Paste one amount per line to run several figures at once — a salary, a price, a savings balance — and compare how each one holds up against rising prices.

The direction option decides which way the calculation runs. Forward takes an amount you have today and projects it into the future, showing the future nominal value needed to match today's purchasing power alongside the real, inflation-eroded value of the amount if it stays unchanged. Backward takes an amount from years ago and converts it into today's equivalent money — the classic "what was this worth back then" question. Switch between a single fixed average rate and a custom rate per year (type the amount, then one yearly rate per line) when inflation wasn't steady. Turn on the interest option to see whether an interest-bearing balance keeps pace with inflation, or show the real value of a regular yearly income to see how a fixed payment loses ground over time. Pick a currency, the number of decimal places, and whether the result prints as a table or as plain text.

Windows and Unix line endings are both accepted. Custom-rate mode reads the first line as the amount and every line after it as one year's rate, so the number of rate lines sets the number of years. The live tally below the output reports the headline value, the overall change in purchasing power and the number of years covered, updating as you type.

Everything runs locally in your browser — no amount or rate you enter is ever uploaded. Copy the result, download it as a .txt file, or send the output back to the input to keep refining a scenario.

FAQ

What is the difference between forward and backward?
Forward starts from an amount you have today and projects its purchasing power into the future. Backward starts from an amount that was worth what it was worth in the past and converts it into today’s money.
How does the custom rate-per-year option work?
Put the amount on the first line, then one inflation rate percentage per year on the lines after it. The number of rate lines becomes the number of years, so the fixed "years" option is ignored in this mode.
Does the interest option mean my money is guaranteed to beat inflation?
No. It simply compounds your amount at the interest rate you enter so you can compare it against the inflation path — whether that beats inflation depends entirely on the rates you choose.
Can I calculate more than one amount at the same time?
Yes, in fixed-rate mode. Put one amount per line and every line is calculated with the same years and rate. Custom-rate mode supports a single amount, since each line after it is a yearly rate.
Is my financial data uploaded anywhere?
No. Every calculation runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript — the amounts and rates you enter never leave your device.
