Minecraft color codes

Paste any text and this tool wraps it in Minecraft's formatting codes, the § sequences the game reads to color and style chat messages, signs, item names and server MOTDs. Pick a single solid color from the 16 standard §0–§f codes, cycle a rainbow across the text, or blend smoothly between two colors you choose — the last two use the §x hex-color format supported since Minecraft 1.16, so the gradient isn't limited to the classic 16-color palette.

Four format toggles layer on top of any color: bold (§l), italic (§o), underline (§n) and obfuscated (§k), the scrambling effect used for enchantment-table text. Apply color per character for a tight rainbow effect or per word for a calmer look, and choose how the code marker itself is written: the raw § symbol for pasting straight into chat or a sign, the \u00A7 escape sequence for a server.properties MOTD line (Java property files can't hold the real § byte, only its escaped form), or the & shorthand many Bukkit and Spigot plugins expect instead.

Minecraft resets bold, italic, underline and obfuscated every time a new color code appears, so a rainbow or gradient with formatting turned on repeats the format codes after every color change — this tool does that automatically, so the styling holds all the way through the text instead of dropping after the first character. The live tally below the output tracks the colored characters, the codes inserted and the final output length.

Everything runs locally in your browser — the text you type is never uploaded or sent anywhere. Copy the result straight into a chat command, a sign, a book or your server.properties file, download it as a .txt file, or send it on to another tool.

FAQ

What are the § color codes?
They're Minecraft's own formatting codes: a § symbol followed by one character selects a color (0–9, a–f) or a style (k, l, m, n, o, r). The game reads them directly in chat, signs, books and item names.
How do I set a colored server MOTD?
server.properties can't store the real § character, so Java expects it written as the escape sequence \u00A7 instead. Pick the \u00A7 marker option and paste the result into the motd line.
Why does my formatting (bold, italic…) stop partway through a rainbow?
In Minecraft, any new color code resets bold, italic, underline and obfuscated. This tool re-inserts your format codes after every color change in rainbow and gradient mode, so the style keeps holding.
Do hex colors work in every Minecraft version?
The §x hex-color format used by the rainbow and gradient modes needs Minecraft Java Edition 1.16 or later. For older versions or Bedrock, use solid color mode, which sticks to the 16 codes every version supports.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The color codes are generated entirely in your browser — your text never leaves your device.
