Break-even calculator

Find the sales volume where revenue covers costs, from price, variable cost and fixed costs.

Input

Break-even calculator

Paste one line per product as name;price;variable cost — or add a fourth field for its sales-mix share — and this tool finds the volume where revenue stops losing money and starts making it. It reports the break-even point in units and revenue, the contribution margin per unit and its ratio to price, plus a profit table at half, one, one and a half and double the break-even volume, so you see the shape of the curve, not just one point on it.

Set fixed costs to the rent, salaries and other costs that don't change with volume, for the period you're planning — a month or a year. Add a planned sales volume to see your safety margin: how far that plan sits above or below break-even, in units and percent. Add a target profit and the tool works out the extra volume needed to clear fixed costs and still hit it. Paste more than one product line and the calculator blends them with a sales-mix-weighted contribution margin — the standard approach for a shop selling several things at once. Shares that don't add to 100 are normalized automatically, and a blank share splits evenly among the rows that left it blank.

A row is skipped, and listed at the bottom, when its numbers can't be read, or when variable cost is at or above price — a product with no contribution margin can never break even alone. Choose a currency symbol or none, and a text or table layout for the output.

Everything runs in your browser. Your costs, prices and sales figures are never uploaded — the calculation happens entirely on your device. Copy the result, download it as a .txt file, or send it to another tool's input to keep working with the numbers.

FAQ

How is the break-even point calculated?
Break-even units equal fixed costs divided by the contribution margin per unit (price minus variable cost). Break-even revenue is that unit count multiplied by price.
What does the mix share do for more than one product?
It weights each product's contribution margin by the share of unit sales it represents, so the blended break-even point reflects a realistic sales mix rather than treating every product as equally likely to sell.
Why was a row skipped?
Either its price or variable cost couldn't be read as a number, or the variable cost is equal to or greater than the price — that product loses money on every unit and can never reach break-even alone.
What is the safety margin?
It compares your planned sales volume to the break-even point, in units and as a percentage. A positive number means the plan sits above break-even; a negative one means it falls short.
Is my cost and pricing data uploaded anywhere?
No. The break-even calculator runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is sent to a server.
