Text abbreviation translator

Paste a message full of internet and SMS shorthand and this tool expands every abbreviation it recognizes to its full meaning — "brb" becomes "be right back", "tbh" becomes "to be honest", and so on across a built-in dictionary of more than 250 common terms. It's built for anyone who needs to read old-school chat slang in plain English: a parent decoding a teenager's texts, a moderator reviewing forum posts, or a writer double-checking what an acronym in a draft actually stands for.

The Direction option flips the operation: switch to "Shorten to abbreviations" and the tool scans your text for phrases it knows — "for your information", "laughing out loud", "talk to you later" — and swaps them for the matching abbreviation instead, which is handy for drafting texts or captions that need to fit a tight character limit. Turn on "List found abbreviations with meanings" to get a plain-language glossary appended under the result, listing every term the tool matched and what it means, useful when you want the expansion and a quick-reference key at once.

Matching is whole-word only, so "lolcat" is left alone even though it contains "lol", and every match keeps the surrounding punctuation and capitalization: "LOL" expands to "LAUGHING OUT LOUD", "Btw" becomes "By the way", and a comma or exclamation mark right after an abbreviation stays exactly where it was. Anything the dictionary doesn't recognize — regular words, names, emoji, text in other languages — passes through completely unchanged. The full dictionary is also printed as a reference table below the tool, so you can look up a term without running a conversion at all.

Everything runs locally in your browser; no text is ever uploaded. When you're happy with the result, copy it, download it as a .txt file, or send it straight into another tool's input to keep working on it.

FAQ

Which abbreviations does it recognize?
A built-in dictionary of 250+ common internet, SMS and chat abbreviations — things like lol, brb, imo, tbh, smh, fyi and icymi. The full list is printed as a reference table below the tool.
Can it turn full phrases back into abbreviations?
Yes. Switch the Direction option to "Shorten to abbreviations" and the tool looks for phrases it knows, such as "for your information" or "talk to you later", and replaces them with the matching abbreviation.
Will it change my capitalization or punctuation?
No. An all-caps abbreviation expands to all-caps text, a capitalized one keeps its capital letter, and any punctuation right next to it stays exactly where it was.
Why did it skip a word I expected it to change?
It only matches whole words and known phrases exactly, and there's no context awareness — a word that looks like an abbreviation inside a longer word (like "lol" inside "lolcat") is left alone, and a term outside the built-in dictionary isn't touched.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The abbreviation dictionary and the conversion both run entirely in your browser — nothing you paste here is sent to a server.
