Volume and surface area calculator

Paste one or more sets of dimensions and this tool calculates volume, surface area and, where it applies, lateral surface area for seven common solids: cube, cuboid, cylinder, sphere, cone, square-based pyramid and pipe (a hollow cylinder). Each result shows the formula that was used, so you can check the math instead of trusting a black box.

Pick the shape first, since that decides how many numbers each line needs: a cube takes one side length, a cylinder takes a radius and a height, a pipe takes an outer radius, an inner radius and a height, and so on — the input placeholder always shows the order for the shape you picked. Set the length unit your numbers are in (millimeters through feet) and the unit you want volume reported in (cubic meters, liters or US gallons); surface area is always shown in the square of your chosen length unit. Pick a material from the table — water, aluminum, steel, concrete, wood, glass, gold or plastic — to get a mass alongside the volume, or choose "Custom density" and enter your own figure in kilograms per cubic meter.

Paste several lines to calculate a batch at once: one shape per line, each parsed and reported separately, with a total volume and total mass added when there is more than one. Choose plain text for a step-by-step readout or a table for a compact, scannable summary, and set how many decimal places to round to. A line that doesn't match the shape you picked is reported with its line number so it's easy to fix.

Everything runs locally in your browser; no dimensions or results are ever uploaded. Copy the output, download it as a .txt file, or send it straight into another tool such as the unit converter or number statistics calculator to keep working with the numbers.

FAQ

Which solids can I calculate?
Cube, cuboid (rectangular box), cylinder, sphere, cone, square-based pyramid and pipe (a hollow cylinder, given by its outer radius, inner radius and height).
What order do I enter the dimensions in?
It depends on the shape: a cylinder or cone needs radius then height, a cuboid needs three side lengths, a pipe needs outer radius, inner radius, then height. The input placeholder shows the order for whichever shape is selected.
How is mass calculated?
Mass is volume multiplied by density: pick a material from the table for a typical density, or choose "Custom density" and enter your own value in kilograms per cubic meter.
What's the difference between surface area and lateral surface?
Surface area is the total area of every face. Lateral surface (the "shell") excludes the flat top and bottom — shown separately for cylinders, cones, pyramids and pipes, where the two differ.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Every calculation runs entirely in your browser — your dimensions and results never leave your device.
