Input

British and American spelling converter

Paste English text and this tool rewrites it in either British or American spelling, so a document written for one audience reads naturally to the other. It is built for editors, translators and anyone publishing the same copy on both sides of the Atlantic — a manual localised for a UK audience, a blog post picked up by a US site, or a style guide check before publishing.

The direction option chooses which way the conversion runs: British to American or the reverse. Five toggles control which spelling families are touched — -ise/-ize endings (organise/organize), doubled consonants before a suffix (travelling/traveling), -our/-or spellings (colour/color), -re/-er spellings (theatre/theater), and vocabulary that differs entirely rather than just in spelling (lift/elevator, biscuit/cookie, flat/apartment). Turn off any group that doesn't apply to your text. Preserve capitalization keeps a matched word's casing — Colour becomes Color, COLOUR becomes COLOR — and the exceptions field takes a comma- or newline-separated list of words to leave untouched, useful for proper nouns or a house style that keeps one spelling on purpose.

The conversion only ever touches whole words from a curated dictionary, so "hour", "tour" and "your" are left alone even though they end the same way "colour" does. Output can be the converted text itself, or a line-by-line list of every change made — from, to, and which spelling family it belongs to — which is the faster way to review a large document before accepting the rewrite. Windows and Unix line endings are both handled, and the tally below the output reports words scanned and matches converted.

Everything runs locally in your browser; the text you paste is never uploaded anywhere. Copy the result, download it as a .txt file, or send the output straight back into the input to run another tool on it.

FAQ

Which spelling differences does it cover?
Five families: -ise/-ize endings, doubled consonants before a suffix, -our/-or spellings, -re/-er spellings, and vocabulary that differs entirely, like lift/elevator or biscuit/cookie. Each has its own on/off toggle.
Will it change words that only happen to end the same way?
No. Matching is whole-word against a curated dictionary, so words like "hour", "tour" or "your" are never mistaken for a British/American spelling pair.
How do I keep a specific word from being converted?
List it in the exceptions field, separated by commas or new lines. Matching there is case-insensitive, so one entry covers every capitalization of that word.
What does the "list of changes" output show?
Every conversion made, one per line, as the line number, the original word, the replacement, and which spelling family it belongs to — handy for reviewing a long document before accepting the rewrite.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using a local word list — your text never leaves your device.
