TAM, SAM and SOM calculator

TAM, SAM and SOM are the three nested numbers behind almost every market-sizing slide: the total addressable market, the slice of it your product can actually serve, and the slice you can realistically win. This tool turns a few inputs into all three, plus the ratio between them and the revenue you can expect at your target market share — the number that ends up on a pitch deck or a business case.

Two approaches cover how people actually estimate a market. Top-down starts from the top: enter potential customers and average revenue per customer as "customers;revenue" on one line, then set what percentage of that total is addressable (SAM) and what percentage of that is obtainable (SOM). Bottom-up starts from evidence: paste one line per segment as "segment;customers;price;share", and the tool sums each segment's own revenue potential and its own obtainable share into a total — useful when you have real numbers for a few customer groups rather than one top-line estimate. Add an annual growth rate and a number of years to project all three figures forward, and choose the currency and whether the result prints as text or a tab-separated table.

Both line endings are accepted, decimal commas and thousands separators parse correctly, and a bottom-up paste that has a malformed row simply skips it and reports how many were skipped rather than rejecting the whole list. The live tally under the output highlights SOM — your obtainable revenue — alongside TAM and how much of the total market that share represents.

Everything runs locally in your browser; the customer counts, prices and segment names you paste are never uploaded anywhere. Copy the result, download it as a .txt file, or send the output back into the input to try a different set of assumptions.

FAQ

What is the difference between TAM, SAM and SOM?
TAM is the total revenue opportunity if every potential customer bought from you. SAM is the slice of TAM your product and go-to-market can actually reach. SOM is the realistic slice of SAM you can capture, usually within a given time frame — it is the number most investors and plans care about.
What does the "share" column mean in bottom-up mode?
It is that segment's own obtainable share, 0-100%. Listing a segment already marks it as addressable, so SAM equals the sum of every segment's revenue potential; each segment's share then narrows its contribution down to SOM.
Why do I need two separate percentages in top-down mode?
SAM% narrows TAM down to what you can serve (the right geography, product fit, price point). SOM% then narrows SAM down to what you can realistically win against competition and go-to-market limits. Applying them separately keeps each assumption visible instead of hiding one guess inside another.
How does the growth projection work?
TAM, SAM and SOM all grow at the same compounding annual rate you set, since the ratios between them are assumed to hold as the market expands. The projection lists one row per year up to the number of years you choose.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser — the customer counts, prices and segment names you enter are never sent to a server.
